Best free annual-fee credit cards in Japan
1. Suica Aeon Card
Point back: WAON Point
Brand: Visa / Master / JCB
This is the only Suica-style card with a free annual fee that I know of.
Basically, it’s like the Suica/Pasmo card you use for trains, but with added credit-card functionality. The most convenient feature is:
Auto-charge (automatic top-up) when your balance is running low (you can set it up in advance —> no need to manually top up when you’re commuting)
On top of that, you can also use it like a regular credit card for shopping:
Base points: 0.5%
At Aeon Group: 1%
On the 20th & 30th of every month: 5% off directly
👉 Ideal if you often shop at Aeon Mall.

2. PayPay Card (Yahoo used to be)
Point back: PayPay Point
Brand: Visa
One of the easiest cards to get approved for in Japan—especially helpful if you’ve been rejected for other cards before.
Pros:
Base points: 1% on most transactions
If you:
Pay 30+ times per month
Each purchase is 200 yen or more
→ Boosts to 1.5% the following month
Often runs campaigns with 5%–20% point boosts
Strong compatibility with the PayPay ecosystem
Cons:
Only Visa — not accepted at Costco (Costco only takes Mastercard)
👉 This is the card I use the most right now.

3. 三井住友カード ナンバーレス (SMBC NL)
Point back: V-Point
Brand: Visa / Master
Great if you frequently:
Dine out
Shop at convenience stores
Benefits:
Up to 7% back at:
7-Eleven, Lawson, MiniStop
McDonald’s, KFC, Mos Burger
Saizeriya, Hama Sushi…
Can reach 10% during campaigns
📌 Conditions:
Pay with contactless (Apple Pay / Google Pay)
Notes:
Mastercard → only works with Apple Pay
Android → it’s best to choose Visa (Google Pay doesn’t support Mastercards)
Also:
You can use it for NISA investments through SBI Securities
Point back: 0.5% (if you meet the spending requirements)
👉 Definitely worth having if you often eat out, buy things at convenience stores, or invest in NISA with SBI shoken.

4. Rakuten Card
Point back: Rakuten Point
Brand: Visa / Master / JCB / Amex
One of the most popular cards in Japan.
Pros:
Use on Rakuten:
Get 1% → several tens of % back (campaigns)
Invest in NISA via Rakuten:
Get up to 1% back
Plus:
Often offers a sign-up bonus:
From a few thousand → up to 10,000 points
👉 If you use the Rakuten ecosystem (shopping, mobile, bank, etc.), this card is definitely worth getting.

5. Amazon Mastercard
Point back: Amazon Point
Brand: MasterCard
For anyone who shops on Amazon a lot.
Benefits:
Amazon:
1.5% (usually)
2% (Prime members)
Outside Amazon:
0.5% – 1%
👉 Especially great if you frequently hunt for deals on Amazon.

Summary:
Each card has its own strengths. If you can own them all and use them according to their best features, you’ll get the maximum benefit.
If you:
Ride the train often, and shop at Aeon -> Suica Aeon
Use PayPay a lot -> PayPay Card
Eat out often, and shop at convenience stores -> SMBC NL
Use the Rakuten ecosystem -> Rakuten Card
