My experience negotiating a discount with NURO
NURO is one of Japan’s leading internet providers. I’ve been using it for nearly 3 years now, and honestly, I haven’t run into any major issues. The connection speed is steady, and the overall experience has been pretty great.
As many of you know, NURO usually offers attractive promotions for customers who sign up for the first time. But most of these deals only last for the initial period. That’s been true in my case too—discounted for the first 12 months, then it goes back to the original price.
At the moment, I’m paying around ¥5,000/month (and that’s after an additional discount for bundling NURO’s gas). Still, this price feels a bit high compared with other providers. Even though NURO’s basic plan offers 2Gbps (while many others offer 1Gbps), in real day-to-day use, I don’t actually need that level.
So last month, I decided to call NURO and try negotiating the price.
What surprised me was that in their automated phone system, there was even a dedicated option for customers who want to discuss billing rates. That pretty much tells you negotiation isn’t rare—it's actually quite common.
After I got through to a customer service agent, I explained things pretty directly:
I’ve been using NURO for a long time
The initial promos ended a while ago
I checked the market and found some other services that are cheaper
If there aren’t any additional discounts, I’ll consider switching providers
And the result was… they almost didn’t hesitate, and offered me a ¥2,000/month discount for the next year.
Honestly, I was pretty shocked 😄
I agreed right away, and in my head I was like, “No problem—just call again after a year.”
To be fair, switching internet providers in Japan can be a hassle:
Your internet may be interrupted
You have to set everything up again
Most other providers only offer 1Gbps plans, or they jump straight to 10Gbps
So if NURO is willing to keep offering a reasonable discount, I really don’t see a reason to switch.
Conclusion
If you’ve been using NURO for a while and your promo is gone:
👉 Don’t be afraid to call and ask for a discount.
The longer you wait, the more you end up paying “extra” money you don’t really need.
